Now that's what we call a snowstorm. In case you haven't heard, Lake Tahoe has already received a record-breaking amount of snow for the month of January. Here at Northstar California, we've been blessed with more than 100 inches just in the last week! Needless to say, this has definitely been the "Storm of the Decade" and powder hounds like myself are loving every second of it.
However, with great powder comes great responsibility, and this week Northstar closed operations for several days to ride out the storm. This decision was not made lightly but it gave our mountain safety teams the opportunity to ensure the highest measure of condition stability for guests and employees alike. Several weather hazards remained in effect for much of the week, including blizzard, mudslide, avalanche, and flood warnings. Around Lake Tahoe, residents could be seen tunneling out of their homes and digging their cars out from under massive piles of snow.
Nonetheless, I've had a few chances to hit the white room this week and I still can't get over the feeling! If you've never ridden in powder before, let me attempt to fill you in. Just imagine gliding weightlessly in what feels like slow motion through a snow-covered winter wonderland. Few experiences compare.
One such experience was this past week, meeting up with friends and lapping Rendezvous Glade (black) for hours. The best part was that each run was different from the last. The snow was falling so hard that by the time we retraced our tracks, they had vanished and been replaced by pristine white fluff. The opportunity to ride with good friends completely defines a trip to the mountains.
This storm provided me with another great gift, as I got snowed in at work and had the chance to experience the magic of slopeside lodging, staying at Aspen Grove condos. My unit was equipped with a full kitchen, television (with Netflix, Hulu, Pandora, etc.), fireplace, and a luxurious queen-size bed. Yet another perk of Northstar, having everything you need on-property. I was extremely content to sit by the fire with my glass of wine and watch gigantic snowflakes fall outside my balcony window all evening. I never wanted to leave!
With a holiday weekend on the horizon, there's plenty to look forward to this week at Northstar and North Lake Tahoe. Check it out below.
