Now that, ladies and gentleman, is a January to remember. While there are still a few days left in January, I'm happy to report in our last Weekend Drop for the month, that Northstar California has broken records for both the snowiest January and snowiest month in history with a whopping 285 inches of fresh snow. That's more than 23 feet of snow! Please take a bow Mother Nature, snow gods, and Santa.
The last week alone has seen 80 inches of the white fluffy stuff. To say that it's been a little busy at Northstar, would be a massive understatement. Powder hounds rejoiced this week when Northstar opened one of the crowd favorite powder runs, White Rabbit. Midweek powder warriors were gifted with a treat thanks to the latest dumping of snow and optimal conditions that allowed White Rabbit to open.
Going into the weekend, there'll be a morning nip in the air that should make way for blue skies most of the weekend. This is one weekend you don't want to leave your GoPro behind. You can view the full weather and snow report here.
Additionally, it's the last weekend of Safety Month. Have you ever wanted to get first tracks with ski patrol before anyone else is on the mountain? Or get a behind-the-scenes look at a snow cat? Well this weekend is your chance. Get the full details below about it, and other events going down this weekend around Northstar and North Lake Tahoe this weekend.
Insider tip: Northstar's halfpipe is officially open!
Meanwhile, here are some more snaps from this week around the mountain.
- (1/28-1/29) Trail Open and Trail Closure with Ski Patrol. Trail Open (and closure) with ski patrol is your chance to get those tracks and turns that no one else can when the lifts aren't turning. Interested guests should be intermediate to advance skilled skiers or riders.
- (1/28) Grooming Show & Tell. This is where the magic happens! Get a behind-the-scenes tour anytime between 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. at the top of the Zephyr lift on Saturday when Northstar groomers will be showing people the ropes of snow cats and answering questions.
- (1/28) USASA Rail Jam and Slopestyle. Rail Jam and Slopestyle are back to Northstar! Take in the day's events at Northstar on Saturday for Rail Jam and Sunday for Slopestyle. Or, if you think you have what it takes, register to compete.
- (1/28) Twilight Snowshoe Tour. Tony Berendsen's stargazing and snowshoe tours are a crowd favorite. After all, it's not just anywhere that you have a cosmic theatre like you do above Lake Tahoe. His latest tour heads out Saturday evening from the Cross Country Ski, Telemark & Snowshoe Center at 5 p.m., meandering through the forest before culminating with s'mores and hot chocolate to the tune of live music in the Village.
