The Weekend Drop: December 14 Edition

Now a couple weeks into December, I'm thrilled to share that Northstar California has been skiing top to bottom for more than a week! That's thanks in part to one of the best snowmaking systems on the west coast, producing hard-carving groomers with a smooth surface from the top of Comstock all the way through Village Run (Green). This in turn makes great conditions for what I like to call “leg burner laps.”

However, if you’re the type of skier or rider who sticks to the park, there’s good news to report.  Friday will see the much-anticipated grand reopening of the best park in Tahoe. Northstar's mountain operations has been working day after day to transform "Pinball, the run," into "Pinball, the park." So when the rope drops on Friday morning, guests will see more more features for grinding, jumping and sliding.

If you’re more of the type who likes their feet firmly planted on the ground, the Cross Country, Telemark and Snowshoe Center opens for the season on Friday. In addition to the standard nordic activities, the center this year has a new offering: Motorized fat tire bikes.

Cross Country Center

No matter what terrain you take on, you’ll want to dress in layers this weekend. Over the last few days we have seen an inversion set-up over Lake Tahoe and the Martis Valley. Early morning lows have been in the teens and 20s in the Village, but as you climb in elevation, the temperature increases.

From Noel Nights to Silent Nights, there is plenty of entertainment on tap this weekend.  On Thursday, guests will be treated to a unique movie-going experience. Guests can skate around the ice rink while watching a movie and listening to the sound on wireless headphones. It's like silent disco meets drive-in movie…on ice.

Meanwhile, Friday night sees the return of Noel Nights. It’s hard not getting in the Christmas spirit when the Village is transformed into a winter wonderland, where you can enjoy drinking hot cocoa and the spirit of the holidays while your kids take pictures with Santa.

While at this kid-friendly event, take some time to slip away and finish up your holiday shopping in the Village. If you are still looking for a gift for Mom, the Her Mountain Retreat is the perfect way to get mom back on the hill and help her regain the confidence needed to tackle new terrain. The retreat is offered Jan. 6-7 and Feb. 3-4. If those days don’t work, the Her Mountain lesson is available every Saturday and Sunday.

On the note of empowering women, we would be remiss if we did not give a special shoutout to Northstar’s female GM, Nadia Guerriero, who was featured in North Lake Tahoe's Local Luminaries series. Learn more about Nadia in the video below.

Colin Lygren

Colin Lygren is a recovering news reporter seeking a new life in a ski town. While he is originally from Sacramento, Tahoe is the place Colin has always called home. He started visiting the region at just a year old and practically grew up on the slopes with his dad and sister. When he is not writing for Tahoe Ascent, Colin is shooting pictures and video or getting up early to make sure he gets fresh tracks, whether it be a groomer day or a powder day. In the summer, Colin likes to relax on the beach by Lake Tahoe’s blue waters or fly fish in the Truckee River.
