February has officially arrived, leaving January to live on in the memories of Lake Tahoe powder hounds and the pages of history books for years to come. Northstar California received a staggering 285 inches of snow between January 1st and January 31st (that's nearly 24 feet!), making it not only the snowiest January on record, but the snowiest month on record. In case you missed it, take a look at our Instagram recap here.
This past week has granted a sunny reprieve, creating excellent snow conditions and the perfect opportunity for our groomers to showcase their work. With an average of 50 freshly groomed runs every night, the corduroy was all-time. But have you ever wondered how the snow cats are able to create that beautiful pattern? Believe it or not, the process begins the day before, at 4 p.m., as soon as the mountain closes to the public. Groomers work hard all night to produce the best surfaces possible. So next time you're catching that first chair and see the cats rolling in after a long night of work, tip your helmet to the team behind the controls.
Sunshine this week also meant perfect terrain park conditions. Last week, the terrain parks crew managed to roll out 180-plus features for skiers and snowboarders of all ability levels. From jumps and jibs to boxes and rollers, there was truly something for everyone.
Looking toward the coming week, more snow is on the way. A Winter Storm Warning is currently in effect in the Sierras until 4 a.m. on Saturday, February 4th. Snow is expected to fall through the weekend and early into next week, bringing more than a foot of fresh snow to the mountains. Be cautious when making travel plans and expect traffic delays in the Lake Tahoe area on Saturday and Sunday. Additionally, be prepared for changing mountain operations and weather conditions this week. Follow @NorthstarMtn and @Northstar_CA on Twitter for the most up-to-date information.
Insider tip: Use free shuttle service TART on busy days.
