The Weekend Drop: February 23 Edition

It has been another amazing week at Northstar California. In the last seven days, the summit has received 94 inches of fresh snow (that's almost eight feet)! So far this season, Mother Nature has blessed the Sierra Nevadas with plenty of incredible powder days but it doesn't look like she's done showing off just yet. With more snow in the forecast, who's ready for more fresh turns?

The past few days have been busy and full of family-friendly activities for the holiday week. The Snow Play Zone, which has been set up all week, has been a great place for families to relax and play with their little ones. Located on the Overlook above the Village, there are several interactive snow features for children to build and climb on. Additionally, the fresh snow has created excellent conditions for family snowshoe tours

While large snow totals are always a welcome sight, they can sometimes cause delays and holds. It is important to keep in mind that Northstar's mountain operations teams work hard to safely open as much terrain as possible every single day. Trust me when I say that we love this mountain and all of its terrain as much as you do. We love it so much, in fact, that I'm excited to announce the winter ski season at Northstar has officially been extended to April 23!

Despite initial safety holds on Wednesday morning, the Backside opened to the public at noon. I was lucky enough to score incredible first tracks down Challenger (Black) and Monument Glade (Black) with some friends. What I love so much about Backside are the long trails and hidden powder stashes. On a bluebird day, there's just something about waist-deep powder runs that satisfy my soul. Yesterday was definitely one of those days.

The summits' 36 inches of fresh powder on February 22 comes runner-up to this season's record of 42 inches on January 11.

While yesterday and today granted brief reprieves during what's felt like constant snowfall, more winter weather is in the immediate forecast. According to the National Weather Service, scattered snow showers are expected to begin tomorrow evening and last through Monday night. Please keep in mind that snowy conditions may cause traffic delays and/or road closures. For the most up-to-date highway information, visit the Cal Trans website and search for highways 80 and 267.

As this week comes to a close, there are plenty of exciting activities to look forward to in the near future. We hope to see you soon.
