The end of this epic winter season is rapidly approaching but it would appear that Mother Nature never got the message. In the past 7 days, the summit at Northstar California has received 37 inches of fresh snow from 2 separate storm systems. We have officially surpassed a long-standing snow total record, ringing in now at 690 inches! More snow is expected to fall through the weekend and possibly into next week. Get those first tracks and face shots in while you can.
The Spring It On! CANtina: Canned Craft Beer Tasting event took place last Saturday in the Big Springs Day Lodge. A live DJ spun groovy tunes while attendees enjoyed more than 10 delicious canned craft beer selections. If you missed out on the fun this year, don't worry because the event will be back bigger and better than ever next spring.
Last Sunday, I scored first tracks with patrol and several lucky guests before the mountain opened to the public. The morning could not have been more perfect, with sunny skies and 72 freshly groomed runs. After meeting up with the group at the bottom of the Highlands Gondola at 7:15 a.m., we headed to Tahoe Zephyr Express to take advantage of some of the best early morning corduroy in Lake Tahoe. Patrol led us down Upper and Lower Pioneer (Blue), The Gully (Blue), and Flying Squirrel (Black) several times before heading up Comstock Express for a final run down West Ridge (Blue) to Lookout Bypass (Blue) and finally to Boondocks (blue). As the mountain opened to the public, our group finished the morning at The Ritz-Carlton, Lake Tahoe where we enjoyed a delicious breakfast.
According to the National Weather Service, we're in for some more winter weather. Snow showers are expected to continue throughout the day and into the evening, delivering several inches of accumulation. Another system is forecasted to arrive Sunday evening, followed by several weaker systems through the week. It may be April, but don't put away that snow shovel just yet. As always, make sure to follow @NorthstarMtn on Twitter for current information regarding mountain operations, traffic updates, and special events.
