The Weekend Drop: April 6 Edition

It's no surprise that Northstar California enjoyed another incredible week as sunshine continued to kiss the Sierra Nevada Mountains. We kicked off our annual Spring It On! celebration last week with a pond skim event and the springtime fun has just begun. With just 17 days left in this epic season, we're pulling all the stops to ensure an unforgettable winter.

In case you missed the pond skim, we've got you covered with a highlight reel and perfectly-timed photos of some gnarly wipe-outs. April Fool’s Day appropriately marked the date of Northstar's annual pond skim. Competitors and spectators alike enjoyed a beautiful bluebird day at the bottom of Woodcutter (blue) next to The Big Easy. An onlooking crowd gathered around the 75-foot-long pool as each of the contestants took their turn. Spirits were high as a live DJ spun groovy old-school tracks and judges ranked crashes and victories.

Overall, the week was characterized by sunshine and soft snow. The mountain was busy as spring break drew to a close for many schools across the state. The beautiful weather yields perfect learning conditions for skiers and riders of all skill levels, from first-timers to those seeking to improve their park riding.

Insider Tip: Take a lap in the Stash to discover an entirely new definition of natural features!

I've said it before and I'll say it again, there's nothing like springtime park laps in Northstar's legendary terrain parks. All eight parks have been open for several weeks, boasting a combined total of 229 features. My favorite line is Moonshine (medium), where there are plenty of boxes and expertly crafted jumps. Lately, I've been working on my aerial spins, so I've become particularly fond of the angled lips that can be found on both sides of the run. However, the setup on Pipeline (medium/large) takes the cake for ingenuity, as both halfpipes sit parallel to each other before finishing in a perfect quarter pipe.

Winter isn't over just yet. According to the National Weather Service, a fresh storm system is expected to arrive this evening. Today's conditions are likely to give way to precipitation and temperatures in the 40s. Snow is expected to fall through the weekend with a Winter Storm Watch in effect from 12 a.m. on April 7 to 5 p.m. on April 8. As always, exercise caution when traveling in winter conditions and visit the Cal Trans website for the most up-to-date highway information regarding highways 80 and 267.

If you missed out on this week's exciting events, don't worry. There are plenty more activities to look forward to at Northstar California in the coming days and weeks. The season might be wrapping up but the fun is far from over!
